North Swan Beach is among the most remote 4×4-only communities on the Outer Banks — roughly six miles up the sand from the Corolla pavement end. If you’ve booked a North Swan Beach home through Twiddy, Sun Realty, Brindley Beach, Beach Realty, Village Realty, Outer Beaches, KEES, Resort Realty, Outer Banks Blue, or Carolina Designs, the listing said the same thing every North Swan listing says: a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required. Past the ramp at the end of NC-12 there are no paved roads — the beach is the road, and your AWD crossover will not make the trip.

We rent Jeeps and 4WD SUVs by the week to North Swan Beach guests heading exactly there. $1,338 for the full week, any 4WD in our fleet — about $191 a day, structured around the Saturday-to-Saturday vacation rental schedule. All Currituck County beach parking permits, recovery gear, and a sand-driving walkthrough included.

Why North Swan Beach Guests Need a Real 4×4

North Swan Beach is about six miles up the beach from the Corolla ramp — typically a 25–35 minute drive on sand depending on tide. That stretch includes a section between mileposts 14.5 and 17 where the beach narrows and the driving lane shifts toward the dune line, soft sand the whole way. AWD crossovers and rental-counter SUVs don’t have the ground clearance or low-range gearing to make that section reliably, especially at high tide with a week of luggage and groceries.

Real 4×4 means: a true transfer case with low range, ground clearance that won’t bottom out, and tires that can be safely aired down for traction. Every vehicle we rent is set up for the beach, sand-tested, and ready for you to drive straight from our Kill Devil Hills lot to your North Swan Beach rental.

Your AWD Crossover Probably Won’t Make It

RAV4s, CR-Vs, Outbacks, Highlanders, and most rental-counter SUVs lack the ground clearance and low-range transfer case needed for the soft sand approach to North Swan Beach. The tow bill off the 4×4 beach typically runs higher than a full week of renting from us — and most rental car agreements explicitly prohibit beach driving, putting any damage entirely on you.

What’s Included With Your North Swan Beach Rental

Open 7 Days a Week, 7am to 8pm

We’re the only 4×4 rental company in the Outer Banks open every single day with the longest hours in the area: 7 days a week, 7am to 8pm. Beach house check-ins don’t always land on convenient days, and travel days run late — we schedule pickups and returns around your travel and check-in times.

How the Day Works

Pick up your 4×4 from us in Kill Devil Hills — about 45 minutes south of the 4×4 beach ramp, right on your route north. Most customers leave their own car parked safely on our lot for the week, transfer their luggage to the 4×4, and head out. Drive up Highway 12 to your rental check-in. Drive onto the beach at the Corolla ramp and head north past Carova and Swan Beach to your North Swan house.

Reserve Your North Swan Beach 4×4

Summer weeks book out months in advance. If your North Swan Beach dates are locked in, get your 4×4 locked in too. Reserve online or call us — we’ll match your pickup window to your house check-in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a 4×4 to stay in North Swan Beach?

Yes. Past the end of Highway 12 in Corolla, the only way to reach North Swan Beach is by driving roughly six miles up the sand. Two-wheel-drive vehicles, AWD crossovers, and most rental SUVs will get stuck — often before they even get to Carova, let alone North Swan.

How far is North Swan Beach from the Corolla ramp?

Roughly six miles up the beach — about 25–35 minutes of sand driving depending on tide and conditions. The narrow stretch between milepost 14.5 and 17 is the most challenging section.

Do I need a beach driving permit?

You need a Currituck County off-road parking permit to park at your rental house. Driving on the beach itself is free in the Currituck zone. The parking permit is included with every Beach4x4 rental.

Where do I leave my own car?

Right here with us. Most weekly customers park their personal vehicle on our lot in Kill Devil Hills for the duration of the rental — it’s free and far less worry than leaving an extra car at your beach house.

Other 4×4-only Currituck Communities

Same beach, same rules, same fleet. If your house is in one of the other communities up the sand:

  • Carova — the original 4×4-only Currituck stretch immediately north of the pavement.
  • Swan Beach — a small community a few miles up the sand from Corolla.
  • Penny’s Hill — the northernmost stretch, framed by the medano dunes near the Virginia line.
