Penny’s Hill is the northernmost stretch of the Currituck Outer Banks 4×4 zone — the long, undeveloped section between Swan Beach and the Virginia line, named for the massive medanos (live sand dunes) that frame the beach. If you’ve booked a rental house in this area through Twiddy, Sun Realty, Brindley Beach, Beach Realty, Village Realty, Outer Beaches, KEES, Resort Realty, Outer Banks Blue, or Carolina Designs, you’ll need a real four-wheel-drive vehicle to reach your front door. There are no paved roads. The beach is the road, and the trip up is real sand driving.

We rent Jeeps and 4WD SUVs by the week to Penny’s Hill guests heading exactly there. $1,338 for the full week, any 4WD in our fleet — about $191 a day, structured around the Saturday-to-Saturday vacation rental schedule. All Currituck County beach parking permits, recovery gear, and a sand-driving walkthrough included.

Why Penny’s Hill Guests Need a Real 4×4

Penny’s Hill sits at roughly milepost 17 and beyond — about seven to nine miles up the beach from the Corolla ramp. That’s typically a 30–45 minute sand drive depending on tide. The route passes through Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, and the narrow section between mileposts 14.5 and 17 before reaching the Penny’s Hill area. AWD crossovers don’t make this trip — the sand is too soft, the tide windows are too tight, and the distance is too long.

Real 4×4 means: a true transfer case with low range, ground clearance that won’t bottom out, and tires that can be safely aired down for traction. Every vehicle we rent is set up for the beach, sand-tested, and ready for you to drive straight from our Kill Devil Hills lot to your Penny’s Hill rental.

Your AWD Crossover Probably Won’t Make It

RAV4s, CR-Vs, Outbacks, Highlanders, and most rental-counter SUVs lack the ground clearance and low-range transfer case needed for the long soft-sand approach to Penny’s Hill. The tow bill off the 4×4 beach typically runs higher than a full week of renting from us — and most rental car agreements explicitly prohibit beach driving, putting any damage entirely on you.

Open 7 Days a Week, 7am to 8pm

We’re the only 4×4 rental company in the Outer Banks open every single day with the longest hours in the area: 7 days a week, 7am to 8pm. Penny’s Hill check-ins typically involve longer travel days because of the distance up the beach — we schedule pickups and returns around your real travel and tide windows.

How the Day Works

Pick up your 4×4 from us in Kill Devil Hills — about 45 minutes south of the 4×4 beach ramp, right on your route north. Most customers leave their own car parked safely on our lot for the week, transfer their luggage to the 4×4, and head out. Drive up Highway 12 to your rental check-in. Drive onto the beach at the Corolla ramp and head north past Carova, Swan Beach, and North Swan Beach to your Penny’s Hill house. Time the trip to low tide if you can — we’ll help you plan it at pickup.

Reserve Your Penny’s Hill 4×4

Summer weeks book out months in advance. If your Penny’s Hill dates are locked in, get your 4×4 locked in too. Reserve online or call us — we’ll match your pickup window to your house check-in time and tide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a 4×4 to stay at Penny’s Hill?

Yes — and arguably more than any other 4×4-beach community, because of the distance. Past the end of Highway 12 in Corolla, the only way to reach Penny’s Hill is roughly 7–9 miles up the sand. Two-wheel-drive vehicles, AWD crossovers, and most rental SUVs will not complete the trip.

How far is Penny’s Hill from the Corolla ramp?

About 7–9 miles up the beach depending on exactly where your house sits — typically 30–45 minutes of sand driving. The narrow stretch between milepost 14.5 and 17 is the most challenging section.

Do I need a beach driving permit?

You need a Currituck County off-road parking permit to park at your rental house. Driving on the beach itself is free in the Currituck zone. The parking permit is included with every Beach4x4 rental.

Should I time my drive to the tide?

Yes — especially for Penny’s Hill. Low tide gives you packed, harder sand along the ocean and the easiest driving. High tide forces you up onto softer sand near the dune line where soft-sand bogging is more common. We’ll review your week’s tide chart with you at pickup and identify the best windows.

Where do I leave my own car?

Right here with us. Most weekly customers park their personal vehicle on our lot in Kill Devil Hills for the duration of the rental — it’s free and far less worry than leaving an extra car at your beach house.

Other 4×4-only Currituck Communities

Same beach, same rules, same fleet. If your house is in one of the other communities up the sand:

  • Carova — the original 4×4-only Currituck stretch immediately north of the pavement.
  • Swan Beach — a small community a few miles up the sand from Corolla.
  • North Swan Beach — about six miles up the sand — one of the most remote 4×4 communities.
